This year’s symposium will be held on Wed\, Dec 2nd\, 2026\, at the College Ave Student Center in New Brunswick. \n\nThe Keynote will be delivered by Dr. Joe LeDoux from NYU.\nWe will hear presentations from faculty (some new) and trainees from across Rutgers.\nBack by popular demand– the two-minute flash talks by poster presenters prior to the poster session and the trainee “Brain Art” exhibition.\nWe will have a special afternoon session on the new Rutgers Women’s Brain Health Initiative.\n\nKeynote Speaker: Joseph E LeDoux\nDr. LeDoux is Professor Emeritus at New York University\, where he was a University Professor\, Henry and Lucy Moses Professor\, Professor of Neural Science and Psychology\, and Professor of Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Langone Medical School. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His work has focused on the topics of emotion\, memory\, and consciousness and their interaction in the brain. Seeley\, PhD\nDr. Randy J. Seeley is the Henry King Ransom Endowed Professor of Surgery\, Internal Medicine\, and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Michigan School of Medicine. He also serves as the director of the NIH-funded Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center (MNORC). His scientific work has focused on the brain-gut axis and its role in the regulation of energy balance and metabolism with a focus on new treatment strategies. He and his lab have worked to understand the actions of GLP-1 agonists and identify the molecular underpinnings of the potent effects of bariatric surgery on weight and metabolism. \nLinda Rinaman\, PhD\nDr. Linda Rinaman is a distinguished research professor in the Department of Psychology and the R. Bruce Masterton Professor of Neuroscience at Florida State University. She is coeditor in chief of Brain Structure and Function. Her current research using rodents includes anatomical and functional analysis of glucagon-expressing cells in the brain and periphery. Further developments in this line of research provide one of the best-studied biological explanations for the gender disparity in PTSD diagnosis. The lab recently observed that childhood trauma predicts decreased behavioral-inhibition-related mPFC and hippocampal function in women with PTSD but does not impact function in resilient women who experienced trauma but do not have PTSD. The newest studies in the lab address 1) associations between menstrual cycle hormones and brain-based signatures of stress vulnerability in young women\, 2) longitudinal changes in neural structure and function over perimenopause\, and 3) maternal responses to infant cues in the early postpartum window. We use a time-resolved EEG measure of scale invariance\, d2 to estimate distance from this critical regime: lower d2 indicates neural dynamics closer to criticality. We benchmark d2 using ground-truth simulations of a neural mass model and show that d2 is lowest when excitation and inhibition are balanced. d2 is then applied to a task-switching paradigm\, showing more demanding trials shifted neural activity farther from criticality\, whereas faster\, more accurate\, and more flexible behavior tended to occur closer to criticality. These relationships also differed across brain regions\, suggesting that deviations from criticality can reflect both cognitive effort and adaptive control. Because excitation-inhibition balance is thought to govern proximity to criticality\, a key next question is whether experimentally perturbing cortical excitability changes critical dynamics and behavior. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) offers a noninvasive means to test this proposed causal mechanism. Participants received continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS; inhibitory)\, intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS; excitatory)\, and sham stimulation in three separate sessions. Relative to sham\, iTBS is associated with lower post-stimulation resting-stated2\, consistent with a shift toward criticality. During a memory-guided saccade task\, cTBS increases d2 across fixations\, visually guided-\, and memory-guided saccade periods\, indicating a shift away from criticality; it also reduces memory-guided saccade velocity. These findings suggest that theta-burst stimulation can differentially reshape neural criticality\, with consequences for cognitive control and memory-guided behavior.

Here\, inspired by the “use it or lose it” principle\, we present a novel game-theoretic model of self-organizing neural units and show that the brain is\, in fact\, sub-optimal in both regards: First\, we demonstrate that regional competition for connectivity under propagative communication dynamics naturally gives rise to network configurations similar to those derived from the human cortex while being even more efficient and economical. Next\, we use a reservoir computing framework to compare the information processing capacity of these networks against those of the brain. Although comparable in performance\, the more optimal trade-off comes with a tax on computational reliability. Through synthetic lesions\, we show that these networks are fragile because\, to optimize for communication\, they funnel information through a spatially clustered “oligarchy” comprising a tight set of transmodal hubs. In contrast\, the human brain uses a more distributed “rich club” backbone that better resists breakdown following targeted attacks\, even when it means higher wiring costs and less efficient communication. This reveals a previously overlooked principle: cortical networks trade both cost and efficiency for reliable computation. Thus\, our findings highlight computational reliability as another\, and even more prominent driver of brain connectivity compared to wiring cost and communication efficiency.

Here\, we trained three classes of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) on a working-memory task\, forming a graded hierarchy of spatial constraints: Vanilla RNNs (no spatial constraints)\, Masked RNNs (projection constraints limiting where information enters and leaves the network)\, and biophysical RNNs (bioRNNs; projection constraints and spatial embedding of the networks’ connectivity using the brain’s inter-regional Euclidean geometry). We assessed how well each RNN class predicted empirical fMRI activity without exposing them to it during training. Our results showed that bioRNNs were the only networks to successfully predict empirical brain activity and to organize their dynamics into a spatial pattern that recapitulated the brain’s principal hierarchy (the sensorimotor–association axis). Additionally\, bioRNNs’ ability to predict empirical brain activity emerged along a trajectory in which geometry was laid down first\, then partly traded back as the task was mastered. Importantly\, brain-like topological features emerged in bioRNNs as they increased their task proficiency while maintaining their ability to predict brain activity. Taken together\, our results indicate that physical geometry and cognitive inputs play distinct\, complementary roles: while geometry constrains the space of possible brain dynamics\, cognitive inputs determine which dynamics are expressed. They also situate topology as the scaffold through which the physically embedded brain reconciles wiring costs and computational demands.

Yet it remains unclear which correlations—and how many—are needed to predict large-scale neural activity. Here\, we present an information-theoretic framework to identify the most important correlations\, which provide the most accurate predictions of neural states. Applying our framework to cortical activity in humans\, we find that the vast majority of variance in activity is explained by a small number of correlations. This means that the brain is highly compressible: Only a sparse network of correlations is needed to predict large-scale activity. We find that this compressibility is strikingly consistent across different individuals and cognitive tasks and that\, counterintuitively\, the most important correlations are not necessarily the strongest. Together\, these results suggest that nearly all correlations are not needed to predict neural activity\, and we provide the tools to uncover the key correlations that are.

His doctoral research combined intracranial recordings from neurosurgical patients with non-invasive techniques such as 7T fMRI to investigate the cortical-hippocampal interplay underlying human memory functions.\nFor his postdoctoral training\, Itzik joined UC San Francisco to work with Prof. Edward Chang and Prof. Loren Frank on the neural mechanisms of speech production. His research uncovered a key role for theta oscillations in coordinating articulatory movements during fluent speech and revealed a dynamic interplay between the speech cortex and hippocampus that supports verbal memory formation.

Its next challenge is explanatory: understanding how the described architecture underlies brain function\, behavior\, and disease. In this talk\, I will present two lines of work that address this challenge at different scales. The first uses multivariate information theory to define brain modules through patterns of higher order redundant and synergistic interactions. This framework reveals how the balance between within-module redundancy and between-module synergy reorganizes across the human lifespan and\, in ongoing work\, across the progression of mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. The second turns to the Drosophila brain\, where circuit architecture\, neural activity\, and behavior can all be measured directly. I will describe ongoing work characterizing the network role of distinct thermosensory neurons and how it can be used to predict neural function and behavior. Together\, these projects suggest that network architecture\, more than the conventional classification of brain regions and neurons into systems and cell types\, provides a fundamental substrate for understanding brain function\, behavior\, and their disruption in disease.

Dr. Bolton earned a doctorate in clinical psychology with a concentration in neuropsychology from Wheaton College in suburban Chicago. Prior to joining Vanderbilt as faculty\, he completed a doctoral internship in clinical neuropsychology at Rush University Medical Center and the Rush ADRC and a postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center Department of Neurology. Dr. Bolton’s research focuses on the use of novel methods for early identification of Alzheimer’s disease\, with a particular focus on blood-based biomarkers. He has received numerous grants from the National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association to better understand the ability of blood-based biomarkers to predict meaningful clinical changes in older adults\, and to understand clinical\, ethical\, and social aspects of disclosing Alzheimer’s disease biomarker results to patients and their loved ones.
